The Rose Hill Packing List: What to bring and what to leave behind

If you or a loved one are about to enter residential mental health treatment, your mind is probably racing – thinking about all the emotions to manage, details to organize and questions to answer. So, in these moments, the last thing we want you worrying about is what to pack. To help ease this small part of the process, we’ve created a Rose Hill packing list to ensure you have everything you need when you arrive, so you can focus on what matters most: your healing journey.

Let’s take a look at what to bring with you…

Clothing:

  • Tops, like tank tops, T-shirts, long sleeve shirts and sweatshirts/sweaters
  • Pants, like jeans or other full-length pants, sweatpants, leggings and shorts
  • Underclothing: Underwear, socks, bras and long johns
  • Sleep wear and bath robe
  • Athletic clothing, if the resident plans to utilize our gym facilities
  • A few nicer outfits for town trips, campus social events, interviews and volunteer/work in the community
  • Outerwear, like a lightweight and/or rain jacket, winter coat, hat, gloves and scarf
  • Swimsuit (for swimming-related town trips)
  • Shoes, like tennis shoes, boots, sandals/shower shoes and other comfortable footwear

Please note: While Rose Hill does not have a dress code policy, clothing should be appropriate (not too revealing and no offensive graphics) and comfortable. Residents should have at least a seven to 10-day supply of clothing that is appropriate for Michigan’s changing seasons.

Personal care products:

  • Hair and body care, like shampoo, conditioner, body wash/soap, deodorant, shaving cream, lotion, feminine hygiene, etc.
  • Face and beauty care, like moisturizer, face wash, makeup remover, cosmetics, etc.
  • Electric shaver
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, mouth wash (alcohol free is preferred), etc.
  • A shower caddy (to carry items to and from the bathroom)
  • Laundry products, like detergent, softener, stain remover and dryer sheets, and a basket

Please note: Certain items, including sharps, products with alcohol and laundry products, will be held in a bin with the resident’s name on it in a locked office within their residential building. Residents must check these items in and out from team support specialists when needed and return them when finished.

Optional items:

  • Alarm clock
  • Watch or jewelry
  • Books, magazines, notebooks, etc.
  • Hobby items, like musical instruments and art supplies
  • Family pictures or other desired decorations for the resident’s room
  • Nicotine products, if desired

Please note: Residents can have a maximum of one pack of cigarettes per day, or the equivalent for vapes. Rose Hill does not allow residents to bring refillable vapes or vapes containing THC. Vapes must be unopened in the original package and must be disposable. Residents should bring a one-month supply at admission, if desired. (At admission, staff will take any excess nicotine products that exceed the one-pack-a-day maximum. They will be stored in a locked area within the residents’ building and can be checked out daily to replenish. Additionally, we do go into the community to repurchase nicotine products.)

Items provided by Rose Hill Center:

  • All bed linens, including mattress pad, pillow, blankets, sheets and bed spread (Residents may bring their own if desired.)
  • All furnishings, including a bed, dresser, lamp, nightstand, small safe and mirror
  • Towels, washcloths and a laundry bag

Prohibited items:

  • Electronic devices, including smart phones, smart watches, tablets, laptops, television sets, portable DVD players, video game consoles, personal handheld games, cameras, recording devices and smart speakers
